THE REGION

Corner Brook is a city located on the west coast of Newfoundland, NL, Canada. Located on the Bay of Islands at the mouth of the Humber River, the city is the largest population centre in the province outside of the Avalon Peninsula. As such, Corner Brook functions as a service centre for both western and northern Newfoundland. With a current population of approximately 20,000 individuals, Corner Brook is a bustling community.

Corner Brook was originally four distinct communities with unique commercial activities. Curling concentrated on the fishery; Corner Brook West, also known as Humber West or the Westside, concentrated on retail businesses; Corner Brook East, also known as Humbermouth and the Heights, concentrated on the railway and industrial operations; and Townsite, also known as Corner Brook, was home to the employees of the pulp and paper mill. In 1956, these four communities were amalgamated to form the current City of Corner Brook. Corner Brook is home to the Corner Brook Pulp & Paper Mill, which has been a major employer for the region. The city has the largest regional hospital in western Newfoundland, as well as shopping and retail, federal and provincial government offices, and three secondary institutions comprised of Grenfell Campus, MUN; College of the North Atlantic; and Academy Canada. In recent years, Corner Brook has become a small but growing center for film and television production in Eastern Canada.

The Humber Valley region offers some of the best outdoor adventure activities in Atlantic Canada with modern ski facility at nearby Marble Mountain, golfing at Humber Valley Resort, salmon fishing on the Humber River as well as multiple mountain biking, hiking and driving tour options.
