With the upcoming Provincial Election quickly approaching, the GCBBT reached out to the candidates for the Long Range Mountains for further information on their party platforms – specifically targeting issues directly impacting our business community. With economic uncertainty and an upcoming federal election, our members are keen to understand how candidates will support businesses in our region. The Greater Corner Brook Board of Trade invites you to share your positions on key issues by way of an in-person or virtual meeting, or, at a minimum, a written response. We understand that your time is valuable and respectfully hold that thought in mind as we request your comments on issues that affect our economy, small businesses, and the workforce.
Key Issues and Questions
Economic Development & Small Business Supports
Small businesses and tourism are the backbone of the Long Range Mountains riding, yet they face challenges like rising costs and potential tariff threats from the U.S.
- What policies will you implement to support small business growth and job creation in our region?
- Can you commit to introducing a concrete plan within your first six months in office?
- Will you support financial assistance, training and mentorship, streamlined regulations, increased market access, digital transformation, and community initiatives like “shop local” campaigns?
Interprovincial Trade and Marine Atlantic Ferry Costs
High Marine Atlantic ferry costs hinder trade with Newfoundland and Labrador, increasing prices for goods and services. This issue is urgent as Canadian businesses seek to diversify beyond U.S. markets.
- Will you commit to reducing or eliminating Marine Atlantic ferry costs within your first six months in office to support trade and tourism?
Immigration Policy Changes
Labour shortages are a critical issue for our local economy, and immigration plays a crucial role in filling workforce gaps, particularly as major projects like Gull Island take shape.
- How will you ensure that immigration policies support small businesses in attracting and retaining workers?
Energy and Sustainability
Balancing renewable energy opportunities with traditional industries isvital for the province’s economic future.
- Can you provide a specific strategy or pilot project to advance this balance within your first six months?
Carbon Tax Elimination
The carbon tax increases costs for businesses and residents, with higher expenses ultimately passed on to consumers.
- Will you commit to eliminating the carbon tax and instead implementing a non-punitive, incentive-based approach?
- Is it possible to achieve this policy change within your first six months in office?
Tourism and Regional Promotion
Gros Morne National Park and other natural assets drive tourism, a key economic sector.
- How will you promote Long Range Mountains nationally and internationally?
- What specific initiatives will you undertake in your first six months?
